Can you disable them in the shoutbox? I understand it 'possibly' increases activity but it fills up the shoutbox too quickly. Either that or making it slightly larger? (Yes, I understand there's a tab for that)

I rather enjoy it to be honest for the same reason @Cloud mentioned. Maybe a toggle feature that allows you to turn it off would make both parties happy?

Yeah, I think a toggle on and off option would be the best bet. A lot of people find out about hot topics, quickly find update threads, etc.
