I'm experiencing similar issues, not often though...
Why do we proxy them?

We can't not proxy the images as that would cause mixed-mode issues with SSL. Currently we are using the stock xF image proxy implementation with some security-related modifications. Unfortunately, certain image hosts are blocking the download and the method they are using for detection could be related to either xF or our modifications. I can debug further, but if it's the former there's nothing that can be done to be honest. Use a less annoying image host.

Edit: Nevermind it was adblock that was blocking them in chrome for me
