I recently got banned for the first time, and it was a perm ban right off the bat.

Is this usual? A lot of people making ban claims say they get 2 day busting bans, and not full on perms.

Yes it can happen. I've had it happen, and many others have too.

Normally Jagex issue a 2 day ban in the first instance, but in my experience, if your account is older and higher level, they are less lenient.

On second thought, I used the super old RS client and not the new Runelite feature on Runemate, so maybe i'm just retarded.

i have never used runelite for runemate so i dont know if its safer but i am starting to hear good things about it

I'm really just trying to figure out how i got banned then, i did nothing different that i've been doing since like 10 years ago.
