It really depends on the situation. I would agree on Linux-> Windows -> Apple, but Mac OS on custom built hardware is really quite lovely. Personally, I run OSX on an HP laptop.

From someone who uses all three daily, my preference goes 1) Linux, 2) Mac, 3) Windows. That being said the majority of my time is spent on Windows unfortunately due to enterprise software support.

Also make sure you're running JDK/JRE 8. You should open up Terminal and type "java -version" to check.
