If I rememebr correctly you can use the items you cut from the fish as bait itself.

That's wrong, it does support fish gutting, you just need a knife in your inventory

But I admit that it isn't really obvious that it supports it, probably only 10% or less are reading through the overview. The next version is going to have a settings UI that will give more customization options, which should give the user a rather detailed feedback on which features are supported.
